5 Reasons You Didn't Get the Job

by Erin Joyce, Investopedia.com

With the employment rate still at 9.5 percent in the United States, you may find yourself in the position of applying, interviewing, and still remaining jobless. You may have thought it was a sure thing; you may have left the office laughing and joking with the interviewer. So why was someone else hired and you weren't? These five reasons may shed some light on the situation.

1. You're overqualified
It's not just a cliche--you really can be overqualified for a position. It's especially true in a tight economy. A candidate that is more qualified would require a higher salary and benefits package for a competitive offer and for long-term retention. If someone else interviewed who fit the qualifications but didn't overly exceed them, it might be in the company's best interest to hire him and save the cash.

2. You don't know the right people
You may be great on paper, and you may interview really well--but if another candidate is the employer's tennis instructor's daughter, you might be out of luck. This isn't a reason you can't really avoid. Your best bet is to make sure you follow up with a genuinely appreciative phone call or note. Leaving a positive impression will keep you in that employer's mind if other opportunities arise.

3. You hit it off, just not professionally
Having a good rapport with your interviewer is great--however, if you bonded over your love of tequila shooters, you may have made a friend and not an employer. In a less extreme example, you may be very easy to interview but still not right for the position. While being friendly and personable are two very important traits, they won't guarantee you the job.

4. You came with conditions
You may be a good fit for the job, but if you come with strings attached, you may not get hired. If you can't see yourself sticking to the position long-term, or if prior commitments mean you'll have to work odd hours, it could take you out of the running. If possible, come in condition-free or at least willing to compromise. However, if you have a restriction that is non-negotiable, it's only fair to both of you to bring it up in the interview--there's no sense in wasting time if the situation won't work out.

5. An unpredictable reason
Often, the reason is one you may never know. You may get an unrelated job simply for having a shared interest with the interviewer, or perhaps because you have a skill the employer hopes to learn from you. It may be as simple as two or more candidates being equally qualified, and you lost the coin toss.

It may also be a simple reason like an off-the-cuff comment you probably shouldn't have made, or a more blatant reason like answering your cell phone during an interview (never a good move, no matter how friendly you are with the interviewer!). Be honest with yourself about the interview process--if you can think of a slip up, learn from your mistake and keep it in mind for your next interview.

The bottom line
Whatever the reason, do your best to learn from it and apply it to your next interview. Don't be afraid to politely follow up and inquire about why you weren't right for the position--just make sure you don't come off as sulking. Be professional, and thank them for helping you to understand what you did wrong, or where you can improve. After all, if you made it to the interview stage once, you're likely to do it again.

How Secure Is Your Job?
While some career fields seem promising, others are cleaning house.

by Mark Riddix, Investopedia.com

There are more than 15 million Americans looking for work, as the unemployment rate has surged to nearly 10 percent. There are six job seekers for every available job opening. Finding employment during these times can seem depressing, until you discover that there are some sectors that are still looking for qualified employees.

Jobs That Are Hiring

Information technology
Information technology is one of the fastest growing job fields in the United States. It's growing so fast that companies are unable to meet the demand with only U.S. job applicants, and many companies outsource their technological needs to India and China because they are unable to find qualified IT professionals in the United States.

According to CNN Money, this career field is expected to grow 45 percent over the next 10 years. "The best job in America" is a systems engineer, an IT job--and IT project managers, network security consultants, and software developers all made the cut for the 50 best jobs to have over the next decade.

Health care
As the population continues to age, the demand for health care is expected to increase rapidly. Health care professionals will be needed to treat illnesses and provide medical attention that ensures a greater quality of life. It doesn't matter what health care profession you pick; the demand is enormous and is expected to only increase with the passage of the new health care reform bill.

Nurse practitioners, physician assistants and physical therapists are listed as three of the top 10 professions on CNN's 2009 Best Jobs list, for their high levels of pay and growth potential. Anesthesiologists and pharmacists also ranked highly.

Financial services
Did you think that financial professionals were suffering because of the economic collapse of the last few years? That isn't the case. While some investment bankers may not be receiving any calls from headhunters anytime soon, there are a lot of finance professionals still in demand. As individuals grapple with the crippling effects of the recession on their finances, the need for financial professionals will only grow.

The demand for financial advisers alone is expected to grow 41 percent over the next six years. CPAs, financial analysts, finance directors, actuaries, and mathematicians are also highly sought after by corporate America.

Jobs That Are Firing

Manufacturing
With all of the jobs being shipped overseas to China, domestic manufacturing jobs are few and far between. The manufacturing sector as a whole has lost 2.1 million jobs. With the closing of several domestic automobile manufacturing plants, factory workers are having a difficult time finding gainful employment.

Even pharmaceutical companies, like Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer, have announced plans to lay off workers over the next few years. Because of the disappointing job outlook, iron workers, welders, sheet metal workers, and drill press operators are some of the worst jobs to have (as far as job security and future outlook) in 2010.

Print media
Do you remember when the newspaper was the source for finding out everything that you needed to know? Well, not anymore. The newspaper industry has been decimated by electronic media and 24-hour news networks.

According to the Business Insider, the U.S. print sector lost 24,500 jobs from September 2008 to September 2009. This is just the beginning. Gannett and USA Today have been trimming staff, and more layoffs may be on the way. Newspaper reporters, columnists, and journalists are being squeezed out of their jobs due to declining circulation and lower ad dollars.

Retail
Americans are spending less, which is bad news for retailers because they are losing sales and being forced to close stores and lay off employees. The retail sector is losing jobs, and some analysts don't expect them to be coming back anytime soon.

According to USA Today, the retail sector has lost roughly 1.2 million jobs since the recession began. Many big brand retailers have been forced to slash payrolls just to stay afloat. Salaried retail workers are becoming extinct, while the few retail stores that are hiring are employing lower-level hourly employees like cashiers and baggers.

The bottom line
The economic outlook may be bleak, but jobs are available in the right sectors. Job hunters can increase their chances of finding employment by developing the qualifications and skills that fit with sectors that are hiring.

Is Your Cover Letter Compelling?

by Heather Huhman, Glassdoor.com

Many advertised job openings still receive hundreds of applications. Although you're qualified for the job, your skills and resume may not be enough to get the hiring manager's attention. To come out ahead of the competition, spend some time perfecting your cover letter.

Your cover letter gives you the opportunity to tell the company the benefits you bring with your skills and qualifications--instead of the hiring manager needing to figure it out. Although cover letters should be compelling, they should also remain concise.

Not sure if your cover letter is going to convey the right message? Here are some tips to help:

  • Always customize your cover letter for each job opening and tell the manager how you found out about the job. Was it through a mutual connection? Did you read about it on Twitter? Or are you reaching out in hopes of a job opening? Let them know.
  • Try to find the name of the hiring manager. If it is not listed, utilize online resources, such as LinkedIn, to find it. Or call the company directly and ask.
  • Tell the employers why you should be hired among all the other candidates --it's what they're wondering anyways!
  • Relate your experience, skills, and interests to the employer's needs. Show that you understand business priorities and are ready to make a contribution.
  • Highlight professional skills you have developed through your experiences.
  • Show your personality and desire by telling a story with specific and quantifiable results. Be sure to tie in your story's theme with the rest of your letter. But don't turn your story into an autobiography.
  • Highlight leadership roles you've held in organizations and clubs.
  • Use language that is professional but friendly and natural. There is no need for huge words in your cover letter.
  • Always close the letter on a strong note. Request an interview or tell them you'll follow up in a week.

The bottom line: Most hiring managers read a cover letter first and may not end up looking at your resume. Don't botch your search by sending in a cover letter that's not up to par.

Are You Spending Your Job-Search Time Wisely?

by Mike O'Brien, Climber.com

Looking for a new job is rarely a short-term proposition, but sometimes the problem isn't the lack of jobs available--it's how you're allocating your time.

According to a recent Climber.com poll of 250 new members who earn $50,000 or more, most job seekers spend the majority of their time--over 50 percent of it--on two activities: searching for and applying for new positions. The numbers break down as follows:

  • Searching for Positions Online 29.94%
  • Applying to Positions 27.28%
  • Networking 24.11%
  • Researching Companies 12.89%
  • Working with a Recruiter 5.56%

With a balance of activities like this, you can get caught in the "activity not productivity" trap--spending the majority of your time on job-search activities that make you feel like you're making progress, but that aren't helping you reach your goals.

Instead, you should reorder your job-seeking priorities and focus on the activities that lead to meaningful, engaging conversations with the recruiters and employers who can best help you gain your next position. A better time breakdown for professionals in the $50,000-and-above marketplace would be as follows:

  • Networking 30%
  • Researching Companies 25%
  • Working with a Recruiter 20%
  • Applying to Positions 15%
  • Searching for Positions Online 10%

Why the shift? For advanced professionals, the focus of your job search should be on developing a strategy specific to you: identifying what your ideal next position is, and in what type of organization, and then networking with people who can help you achieve that goal. You should not be spending the majority of your time on the highly manual process of seeking out new positions. In fact, most job boards and career-management sites can provide you with excellent automated listings, particularly if you've done a good job of identifying your skills, experience, and interests to attract the employers who would best be a fit for you.

In addition, you should take the time to actually research the companies you're considering for your next position. Too often, job searchers feel they "don't have a choice"--that they must take the first job opportunity they find. This may get you employed more quickly, but it will not help advance your career for the long-term. By carefully considering each company you apply to, you can update your resume to position yourself effectively for those organizations, and you will be better prepared to excel during the interview process.

Bottom line, start treating your job search like the next step in a long-term success plan for your career, and don't settle for a stop-gap solution to a temporary problem. You'll start thinking of yourself in a more positive and strategic light--and both recruiters and future employers will as well.
